From the very beginning, the youth of the world has been actively engaged at the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) which are organised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In 2005, we formally gathered for the first time in Montreal ahead of COP11 to make our voices heard at the first Conference of Youth (COY). In 2009, the UNFCCC secretariat and the member States of the Convention officially recognised youth as an observer constituency of its own, and confirmed their status in 2011, to represent the formal voice of Youth in UNFCCC processes. This youth constituency is called YOUNGO.

Over the last few years, COY has grown massively, with huge international participation.

In 2010, less than 500 people got the chance to attend the event in Cancún; but only five years later, over 5,000 activists and change makers participated in COY11 in Paris!

LCOYs

Since 2015, COYs have also been decentralised. Around the world, Local COYs are happening every year; they can be regional or national and are known as LCOYs.

The regionalisation gives advocates an opportunity to analyse climate related topics of national and/or regional importance in-depth before further discussing them in the main COY.
